Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better known under her stage name Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah grew up within the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and compassionate in Arabic was bestowed by her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. In her high school's play she performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's first group, which included several MCs as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an audition for the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. Then he gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time and was awed by the song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
