Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to singing superstar Dionne. In her early years she was a singer in the New Hope Baptist Church choir in Newark. When she reached the age of 15, Houston had sung professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother in Chaka Khan's hit song in 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly did a stint as a fashion model and also appeared on the Seventeen Cover. Also, she provided back vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. The singer was first a featured vocalist for the The New York-based New York Funk band Material. The quality of her vocal performance attracted the attention of big record labels like Arista where she signed up in 1983. In 1985, the debut of Whitney Houston turned out to be one of the most successful debut albums ever. It featured a number of hits like How Will I Know You're Good to Me, Saving All My Love For you and The Most Beautiful Love of All. It was instrumental in her achieving seven US charts-topping singles in a row and beat the Beatles. The album was released in 1987, and it sold over 25 million copies across the globe. The Whitney album followed in 1987 and the singles Where Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to expand on the popularity of her first album. It was, however it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her position as one of the world's most well-known performers. Although the film was not highly appreciated and neither did her performance, but the music of the film's Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the top spot on both singles and albums charts in the United States for months. She sold 44,000,000 copies. The same year, she was married the former New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she has a single child Bobbi Kristina Brown, born in March 1993. About this time her well-documented substance abuse began and by 1996, she used to use drugs every day.
